I wrote this article some time back for my work blog… just to help clients and people in general I guess to work a little on the SEO for their website… thought I´d share! :)
We all know how important SEO is for our website yet it can be such a complex subject that we just put it aside and forget about it. If you try to read online about SEO or search simple articles, all you can find are complex explanations about the algorithms of search engines, complicated strategies and regular changes in the rules of the game. SEO can be simplified and there are just a few very basic things you can do on a daily or even weekly basis to keep your website climbing on a large search engine such as Google.

Within the services that we offer our clients, we always include a basic SEO and the popular statistics tool of Google Analytics. Many clients do not understand how important these key features are and this is why I decided to write this article. Once you have your website with basic SEO and access to the statistics of your website, you can follow all, some or a few of the following steps to ensure that your website will begin to climb in visits and popularity. It is very important that you realize that in some cases it is very difficult for certain websites to climb to 1st place on Google, this depends on many things but especially your type of business or specific niche. For a complex website and/or very general subject, extensive SEO would probably be necessary.

I have written a few tips that are easy to follow in order to make a difference when it comes to following up the SEO of your website:

1. Understand: Make sure you understand the SEO that has been provided on your website. Novographix always provides a full report on the Title, Description and Keywords used to optimize your website. It is very important that you understand the purpose of these keywords and that you use them in any new text or information you upload or update on your website.

2. Analize:
Make sure you check your Google Analytics, this is a free tool offered by Google and it provides all kind of important information about your website and the people that visit. You can see how many visits you have per day, how many pages they visited, how they found you, what keywords they used, etc. This information is important because it gives you very detailed information about your website and who is visiting.

3. Content is king: This does not mean you have to pack your website with tons of information, but it is important that you keep updating on a regular basis. Open a news section on your website or post latest works or a blog. Google spiders love pages that are often updated and the more you get Google to visit your website, the more often it will keep coming back… and so will your visitors.

4. Go public:
Google likes links, it is as simple as that. Post your website link as much as you can, some ideas are:
a) Add your link to online directories (most of them are free)
b) Post your link on the local chamber of commerce, local business association or professional organization.
c) Swap links with friend’s websites
d) Write a blog
e) Write articles for other websites and link back to yours
f) Post on forums
Do the same for others too, if you add articles to your website, make sure you give the correct source information together with the links. The more you cross link, the more paths you give Google to arrive at your website again and again.

5. Go local: If your location is important, make sure you add specific information and repeat throughout your website. If you are located in a specific country, area or town, you need to detail on your information and add to your articles so that people can find you.

6. Contact: Contact Information is vital, add all your complete information including Company Name, Your Name, all your phone numbers, e-mails, fax and any other important information. If you have sales associates, make sure you add their information too. A client might not remember the company but does remember your name or the name of the sales person. Names are very unique and Google will Index them as part of your website.

7. Go social:
Social Bookmarking is the greatest tool ever to get your website out there on the web. Big names in the social bookmarking world are Digg.com, Stubmbleupon, Facebook, Yahoo, Technorati, Delicious and the list goes on. These websites change by the second, therefore all search engines visit them constantly during the day, this will only help you force Google to visit your website through your posted link. Take a little time every now and then and “digg” articles or share your posts on Facebook, if you website is interesting enough, they will re-visit every now and then.

These are just a few very basic things you can do during the week to keep your website fresh and crawling up on major search engines. It must never become a hassle, unless of course you have the extra time to do all of the above. The important thing is that you understand that this is an ongoing process and not a one time thing. The more TLC you give your website, the more it will help your basic SEO.
